#30: Microhabits, breath & self-belief
Welcome to issue #30 of The Power Up, the curated email magazine from Man Body Spirit.

Every day I scour the Internet in search of wisdom, habits, inspiration and practical solutions to help improve the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of our readers, curating the best bits together in this neat little package – and delivered direct to your inbox.

This week we look at the underestimated importance of microhabits in crafting the life we want to live; we look at why many men have underdeveloped mental health awareness, and how breathing techniques can be of great benefit to our mental, physical and spiritual health.

We also have a guide to developing greater self belief, and we finish off with some inspiration for those of you feeling a little bored by all this self-isolation.

As ever, I hope you find something interesting and relevant to you.

Enjoy.

22 Microhabits that will completely change your life in a year
Breakthroughs don’t change your life. Microhabits do.
The British Cycling team famously leapt from perennial also-rans to dominant Olympic gold medallists and world champions with a strategy of marginal gains.
The principle was that if they broke down every small factor involved in riding a bike – from the shorts the riders wear, to the tyres on the bike – and improved them by 1 percent, when they compounded all of those small marginal gains, they would add up to a significant increase in performance.

It most certainly worked for them and it carries valuable lessons we can apply to our lives too.

Sometimes it feels like if we want to transform our lives, we need to make a big change – quit our job, move to another city, end a relationship etc etc… And sometimes that is necessary. But what many of us overlook are the many small things that make up our daily existence and actually have far more of a bearing on our happiness than we realise.

This article outlines 22 impactful microhabits that fall into that category that you might consider changing.

Misconceptions about Mental Health men have
Mental health issues do not discriminate between geographic location, young, old, rich or poor. They impact people regardless of their political leanings, religious beliefs, ethnicity and gender.

Yet mental health struggles do tend to impact men differently than they do women.

Men are less likely to seek help for starters, which means they’re less likely to try therapy and less likely to be on medication. Acts of violence — whether self-inflicted or directed at others — are also much more likely to be committed by men than women.

So what’s going on? What can men do differently, whether they suffer from mental health issues or not? This article explains all.

The art of breath: 5 simple techniques
Believe it or not, I was in my 30s before I learned to breathe properly, and discovered how fundamentally breathing can impact the way we feel.

I’d love to say that from that day onwards I have always breathed fully and enjoyed the benefits. But the reality is far from that.

The vasty majority of us breathe unconsciously in a shallow way that does enough to keep us alive, yes, but doesn’t deliver anywhere near the full potential.

This article outlines 5 simple techniques you can try anytime to explore the amazing power of breath, and to encourage more mindful, beneficial breathing in our day-to-day lives.

Savasana or Corpse Pose (essentially laying perfectly still on our backs for 5+ minutes at the end of a yoga session) comes as a surprise to many new yoga practitioners. And I’m sure I’m not alone in skipping the odd one, especially when practicing at home.
If you, too, have found yourself wondering, “is this really necessary?” then this article will provide the answers you’re looking for.

How to develop self-belief in 8 steps
Many people think that a strong belief in one’s self is something we’re born with. This suggests that people without self-belief can never develop it and are destined to be stuck with low self-esteem.

But self-belief can be developed and it can also be rebuilt if lost.

This article looks at why self-belief is important, why some people lack it, and importantly, provides some solid guidance on how to develop more of it.
